Adjusting levels in photoshop
After stacking your image, the first adjustment is bringing as much information as posible from the midtone levels.

Make sure you adjust your monitor to show clearly
each of the steps in this greytone bar.
Open your image.
This example is the planetary nebula Shapley 1
400 x 2.56 second frames
From the Image/Adjustments menu open the Levels dialog box
Adjust the black and white pointers to the left and right of the histogram.
the mid pointer can be adjusted to suit your taste.
The result is that faint information is bought out.
Remember not to blacken the sky.
It isn't black!
You will loose too much subtle info with a jet black background.
If needed, further subtle adjustments can be made using the Curves, Brightness/Contrast tools.
Clean up any spots where hot pixels have been removed with the Healing and/or Clone tools.
