Meteor Showers

2005 Southern Delta Aquarids

This combination image has all the Southern Delta Aquarid meteors from 27th July to 2nd August 2005, 337 in total. Each meteor was identified from the log file and adjusted so it pointed back to the radian of the shower. The star fields are not correct due to the edge distortion of the wide angle lens used on the CCD video camera and 4 different frames stitched together.

2006 Orionids

This combination image shows about 240 Orionid meteors recorded on the 21, 22 and 23 of October 2006. An observer near my location ( John Vetter, Mudgee Observatory ) reported that on the 23rd a large meteor left a train that remained visible for 25 minutes.

The Pleiades can just be seen right of centre, the Hyades further above right and Betelguese, the brightest star in the top right corner.
The shower radiant is between Betelguese and Gamma Geminorum (out of field).
These meteors are from the debris left in Comet Halley's orbit.
